"Bike had to be unbranded per director's request. His assistant, Jerry Chan, wanted top notch stuff. So Superman is riding a Pake frame with Campy Record Cranks, Phil Wood Hubs, Paul Brake and Lever and looks pretty darn good doing so."

It was stinky, dark, and damp. A bunch rowdy scenesters started jumping off-stage, failing miserably as they attempted to stage dive to fast-paced guitar riffs and bass lines that reverberated throughout the room. The resident scene kid here at Pake was forced by a friend to check out the local fastcore band PUNCH. They just came back from their tour in Europe and performed a show at Submission by 18th and Mission last Sunday.

While checking out the show, we saw PUNCH had a interesting new t-shirts and patches. Dan xAfricax designed the print and it turned out to be pretty awesome.

Modern and clean just like Shanghai (cleaner than Shanghai really). The articles aren't just for fixed gear riders. If you just want to know about "The History of Bikes in China", where to get shoot pool and get cheap food in Shanghai, or just what it takes to navigate its crazy streets, check it. You might never make it to China, but it definitely is an enjoyable read cover to cover.

Riding From South Africa To Addis Adaba

The picture looks like something out of a music video, but this is for reals folks. Two friends (Ben Stewart and Spencer McCormick, both from Wisconsin) riding from Johannesburg, South Africa to Addis Adaba, Ethiopia...one of them (Ben) is riding his trusty Pake C'Mute. As it says on their site, it’s about 7000k or Florida to Alaska or 34,000,000 jumbo hot dogs laid end to end.

They happen to hit Sudan (South Sudan, now) on the historical weekend that South Sudan proclaimed itself a separate country from North Sudan. As of last month the Northern Sudan government troops were raining shells down on an area occupied by a minority group it doesn't like. Fortunately these two aren't going that far north, instead they're heading east into Kenya. Here's an excerpt from their FAQ's.

Why Africa?
To most Americans, Africa remains the “Dark Continent.” We travel to Europe, we compare ourselves to China, we see Latin America in our culture daily, but Sub-Saharan Africa is largely ignored. It’s too far away, too poor, of no “strategic interest.” Too many, it’s a wild land of conflict, HIV and extreme poverty.
We think there’s a better, more honest and more hopeful story to Sub-Saharan Africa. For the last couple years, many African nations have enjoyed high economic growth. Vibrant democracies sprout across the continent. The decades long conflict in the Congo has subsided. Primary education is now widespread.
There is a glimmer, just glimmer, of an African renaissance and we think that is a story that needs to be told. Africa is fundamental to the human story. It’s our birthplace and home to one billion. And yet, its stories are largely bypassed. We hope to fulfill that ancient rite of the storyteller, to attempt to inform, to tell us who we are and where we’re going.

By Bicycle?
Yes! In a car, you can lock the doors, roll up the windows and turn on the AC. On a bicycle there are no shortcuts. We will be fully exposed to the land and its people. Day in and day out, exhausted and exhilarated, we will feel the terrain, every hill, every gully, every pothole, every storm that turns the unpaved road to a river. At times it will be rough. Dogs will run after us. So will children. Some of them will call us names and some will even throw rocks. (Aren’t kids the sweetest?) But likewise, there will be no windshield to protect us from a stranger’s kindness. We pedal through Africa to remind ourselves on the fundamentals of being human.
In addition, it’s worth pointing out: Though we live in era of incomprehensible complexity, i.e. Justin Bieber and nuclear meltdowns, a simple steel frame with two wheels, a chain and some ball bearings can take you across continents. Bicycles are wondrous machines.

Yea. Throughout our ride, we’ll be creatively raising money for World Bicycle Relief and Doctors Without Borders / MSF.
World Bicycle Relief deploys bicycles to increase communities’ economic, health and educational opportunities. Not only are we big fans, but so is Nicholas Kristof.

Interview: Jason Clary

Jason Clary just finished off a thrilling victory at this past weekend’s Red Bull Ride + Style Event (the track race portion). What will make it a particularly memorable victory was that it against some of the most well known athletes in fixed gear - some even coming from as far away as Japan. Jason has been representing Soma Fabrications the past 3 years and recently started riding for Pake Bikes. We took time to ask him a few questions.

State your name, age and city of birth for the record
Jason Clary, 28, Oakland CA

Did you ride other bikes before fixed gear?
My parents signed me up in the ABA(American Bicycle Association) when I was around 9. So I ended up BMX racing for about 7 years. I enjoy all kinds of bicycles. I have had a Hans Ray signature trials bike in the past and enjoy mountain biking as well.

What do you love about fixed gear riding?
I enjoy the simplicity of it. It truly is a great experience controlling the speed of your bike bombing down a hill without brakes.

You ride the streets , you race, and you are also a fair trick rider. In which do you feel you are most in your element?
I enjoy riding in the street the most. Nothing surpasses the feeling of riding in traffic and speeding down hills.

You weren't on the original invitation list for the Red Bull Ride+Style Event. How did you feel when you were asked to be an alternate?
As soon as I saw the original list for the Red Bull race I was interested in participating in it. Also kinda discouraged that I wasn't a first pick. I spent a good week talking to different people and trying to find a way into the event. Aaron Lutze who is the NorCal Red Bull marketing rep happened to be at AreaCycles last week. Kenji Iwahashi, the owner of AreaCycles and one of my sponsors, knew how much I wanted to ride in the event. So he pitched the idea to Aaron. It just so happened that Rainer Schaefer from Macaframa wasn't able to attend the race. So I found my in! Kenji reassured Aaron that I was a good fit for the event and that I wouldn't disappoint.

How did you feel on race day?
I went into the race with a lot of confidence. Once I was able to make a couple of laps and warm up I felt my chances were good to win.

I noticed you had headphones on during your heats. What do you like to listen to when you compete?
I like any type of upbeat music. Usually instrumentals keep me focused and help me keep my cadence steady.

What encouragement can you offer to those considering to use the bicycle for commuting and not just recreation?

I work at a bike shop and ride mine to work all the time. Owning a car seems to get further and further out of my mind the more I ride. It's been 5 years since I have owned a car. My lifestyle has definitely changed and for the better. When I drove a car, it seemed I was always in a rush. When I ride I tend to enjoy what's around me a whole lot more.

Most memorable ride you've been on
My most memorable ride has to be the Wolfpack Hustle Crash – the marathon race. I know you said "ride", but riding through L.A. at 4am with 300 bikes is pretty memorable.

Where would you go first if you had a time machine?
Go back 10 years and give my 18 year old self some good words of advice!

You've had a rough couple of years recently. Do you feel 2011 is looking up?
Yes. 2011 has been a great year for me so far. It's so gratifying to see my hard work pay off. I plan to keep the positive vibe going and my bicycle wheels rolling!! I will continue to ride hard here and hope to travel and compete in events out of the Bay Area, too.

Jason Clary Takes Red Bull Ride+Style By the Horns

Jason Clary powered his new Pake French 75 to victory in the track race portion of the Red Bull Ride+Style event. Jason wasn't in the original line-up, but got called in last minute as an alternate. Actually another alternate, Kell McKenzie were the last men standing. But Jason really brought his "A" game Saturday and he killed it hard in four heats. Obama should've sent Jason to get Bin Laden. (Well maybe not, then he would've been in Pakistan this weekend insteada here in SF makin us look good) Congrats! Here's our 'thank you' vid.

This writer doesn't have that channel, so I probably won't be watching it, but I thought I'd send out a reminder for those who have been looking forward to it. Used to be when ever the media tried to make some money off of fixed gear, there'd be hate being thrown out. But I guess that is type of attitude is getting kind of old, since fixed gear and other messenger culture has long overflowed into popular culture. Hope those guys are getting paid is all I'm gonna say.

Back in February we got wind that the Travel Channel was working on a show about bike messengers in the Big Apple(that city next to the Big Skanky). We were contacted one of the producers, letting us know that one stars owned a Rum Runner frame..

Our first thought was "shitttt we're being scammed again. We're hardened here at Pake, much like the messengers chronicled in "Triple Rush": "The series is onehour doc that follows the chaotic everyday life of three unique courier companies as they battle for survival in an increasingly competitive industry. The work is grueling and the environment can be downright dehumanizing. Witness their hairraising dashes through heavily trafficked Manhattan streets, speeding between cars and racing through red lights – all to earn a few dollars and feed their fast and carefree lifestyles."

We were psyched when we found out it wasn't a scam. PAKE Rum Runner takes the small screen, next stop silver screen!

This is Official! Name Changing News!

Candlestick Park (home of the Niners) will soon be called The Pake Colisseum! SF's other ballpark has already gone through three corporate name changes: Pac Bell to SBC to AT&T now. Candlestick along with a new name will soon have a covered bike parking and a pump track.

O.K. enough of the BS... The real news is that we finally decided what to call our nameless frame models.

Our original steel track frame will now be known as the RUM RUNNER. That was submitted by Jude L. on our FaceBook contest. A rum runner was someone who smuggled alcohol during prohibition time. It is also a name of a cocktail.

With that selected, we decided to name our other frames after interestingly named beverages.

The aluminum track frame set is now called FRENCH 75. This is named after a potent drink made with gin and champagne, which in turn was named after the French 75mm, an artillery cannon that really kicked ass in World War I.

We have also selected the name BOILER MAKER for a player to be named later.

For those who are going to piss on these saying we are encouraging young impressionable minds to drink and ride, become bartenders, or go to Purdue....stop there; we aren't. We just want something to call our bikes.

Pake Urban Six-Speed: Now in White

For 2011, we have put on a few upgrades to the our urban cruising bike. This newest round of Urban 6-speeds have nicer hubs, freewheel and rear derailleur, but the price remains the same. It will now come in white as well as the scrappy looking black. The white makes a big difference don't you think?....Has a totally different demeanor now. Makes you want to ride around with flowers n stuff and wipe it down with a hanky after every ride. Just kidding with that last part.

My favorite parts are the sturdy color matched steel fenders and the seat. It looks wide and couch-like, but it is pretty firm. It's not overly soft like you see on some lower priced bikes. Comfortable, but won't your butt numb after 15 miles.

Available in standard 18" and a step-thru 16" model. (Basket and kickstand not included.)

Sorry for taking our time to pick the winners.
Thanks to all those who racked their brains even just a little to help us come up with official monikers for our nameless bike frames. It was definitely difficult picking from all the entries. There were some very creative ones. Some disturbing ones (which we liked, but probably give our distributors a reason to drop us).

Super Market Street Sweeps 2010 is History

Eric and his son Sprocket moved 541 lbs of food, which helped them
win our Pake frame set. (Sprocket was also the youngest participant
in the race.

This weekend was the SMSW. The event was able to bring in 171 racers (even with some rain and threat of showers!) for 6,920 pounds of food! (Benefits the SF Food Bank.)

They also raised an additional $4,877 that went straight to the San Francisco Food Bank through our new fundraising category (http://www.firstgiving.com/sffoodbank/event/smsw).

This is a great event for cargo and touring bikes as well as speedy bikes as well. And the schwag pile is usually high because of the great organizers and the charity component.

Supermarket Street Sweep No. 5: Win a Pake Frame!

The Pake C'Mute is a wonderful idea. Part road, part commuter, part cyclocross bike, part mountain bike - you can truly make it into whatever you want. I feel this frame will be a dependable life-long friend. Its ageless design will never let you down, no matter how advance frame design becomes.

I foresee the C'Mute evolving into many forms and wearing many hats throughout its life with me. While parts and old technology are replaced, the platform will live on forever.

We love the simple efficient round oversized tubes. It's just classic.
The hourglass headtube takes a 1-1/8" internal headset (Cane Creek IS type)
Track ends have replaceable steel plates. Includes a light but durable alloy crown carbon fork.

This thing is about speed, plain and simple. Plan on getting one soon.

Pake C'Mute "The Touring Bike"

Many thanks to Muuqi up in Seattle for sending us a great write-up he did about his C'Mute in the Life(Cycles) blog he writes. He built it up as pretty nice touring bike..that C'Mute is one versatile machine!! With its horizontal dropouts, the second rack eyelet sit pretty far back and give you better pannier-heel clearance than almost every cyclocross-styled do-all frame out there. (probably close to 450mm from the BB)

Legendary Freestyler at Bumstead

Garrison at Bumstead Bikes in Ontario, Ca sent us this pic. Freestyle rap artist, MC Supernatural was eying some of the complete Pake track build they had on the floor. Supernat ended up customizing a red Pake track frame into a hip commuter.

Looking for an epic alley cat to test those summer legs. This one promises challenging climbs and a Pake aluminum frame set and Burro bag to the winner. The winner won't be able to pick up the alloy frame with carbon fork on the spot, but it will be sent to the winner after they come in early September (yes they've been delayed a bit) and we get the winner's size.

Our 2010 models started getting to some shops a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks to shops like Superb (Boston), Yojimbo's (Chicago), Drif (L.A.) and Bell's (Philly) for stepping up early to stock a fair selection of frames and forks, even though we haven't launched our new website.

We said we'd post shots of the new frames as soon as we could. I tell you while shooting these, we were like getting damn anxious. We just want to start building them up. Seeing what color combos we wanted to try first.

Shops that have pre-ordered should be getting them in a couple of weeks. If your LBS, is clueless, please educate them. We'd appreciate it and they'll appreciate it.

Keep checking the blog for updates. We are in the middle of a website re-design, so we won't be updating the current site with new product. We are stoked with how the new site is coming together...we will be featuring photographs from talented Pake owners as well as the incredible Matt Lingo.

All decals are all removable (even the Tange CrMo ones), but we include decal kits with each frame in case you don't want to remove them... just wanna swap to something different...or if you don't like any of our colors (for crying out loud) and want to repaint....you'll have extra decals.

UPDATE: I took some time to read the comments on the Lauren post. One guy mentioned FixFixFix which we never heard about till today, because we don't go looking for pin-up girls on the internet (never, ever) even if they ride bikes. But in the interest of keeping on top of bike culture, we checked it out a lunch break.

Lo and behold, right there on the front page we have another lady posing with her Pake.

Hey Brie: We noticed those sick and sexy bars. Tell us a little more about them and we'll send you one of our t-shirts. But please don't supply your home address, because our guy in receiving is kind of 'stalkery' and might end up standing outside your window on some night if you do that. I don't know if other bike makers get contacted like this.
Some guy named Dennis with a heavy New York accent calls us up and says he wants to get a couple of track frames for props in a feature film he is helping out in. He says it would be starring Steve Buscemi of "Reservior Dogs" and "Desperado". We of course are intrigued, because Steve kicks ass. His assistant Natalie e-mails us the next day with the additional information like plot synopsis, what size frame and the filming location to send it. We tried to extra research to find about more about this film searching IMDB and Google for any info on this project and IMTOOFAMOUS Productions. We even Googled the address of the shooting location and it turned out to be a innocuous looking suburban house. We write back and ask nicely for any credentials (even an office address). They haven't written back and it a week past their deadline. So I guess we are out of luck or more likely we were lucky not to fall for this possible scam.

Here is the e-mail below with plot synopsis:

Hello,

Per your conversation my boss, Dennis Bloom, I’ve enclosed a brief synopsis of the project.

This project will be filmed on location in Eugene, OR ; Key West , FL ; and various sites in Austria .

I don’t know if he mentioned it but we are working on somewhat of a tight timeline with shooting scheduled to begin in March. We will need all items for consideration no later than February 22, 2010. The onsite location address is 18XX Enchantment Eugene, OR 97402.

We ask that considered items be sent in multiples of two to ensure continuity.
Our request is as follows:

2010 Track Frame and Fork News

For five years, we have been almost solely known for our basic kick-around CrMo track frame in black, with a sprinkling of color every once in a while. That is about to change big time. We've taken some time to consider feedback on the frames, as well think about some fresh changes that will provide some additional versatility and refinement to the line, while keeping the frame the same affordable track frame so many people have come to value.

First the frame:

- 1 1/8" headtube. It's stronger, there are more headset and stem offerings, and it will give you lots of fork options. Say you want to run a CX fork and do some scorching? Or maybe a disc fork for your fixed commuter? Or one of the trick-track fork offerings?
- Bottle bosses= gone.

And then the fork:

- 1 1/8", naturally.
- New straight-blade unicrown design. This is great-looking new fork for us and we're excited about it. It's stiff and strong, and will make a great fork for any build. This is taking the place of our current curved-blade unicrown (1") fork. The limited edition purple will keep the great looking curved, lugged crown fork. Here, see for yourself:

Then the aesthetic changes:

- Decal kits. Every frame will come with alternate decals in different colors. This will let you sticker up the fork, layer stickers on the frame, swap out the stock ones...there really are no limits to creativity here.

....are we missing something?.....oh, colors!

Frames:

Black. Because everything goes with black.

White. Nothing looks quite as sharp as a white bike, and it lets you go in lots of color directions.

Red. Fast.

"Sid" Blue. Kind of like that paint that became synonymous with one fork model, this is a rich color that looks especially good with black, white, and gold parts. Here's a sneak preview:

Grey. Kind of an asphalt color, this blends into the urban landscape and will always look good.

Neon Yellow/Black fadezzzzzzzzz. Yeah we are doing a neon frame, and yeah, its got siq fadez. But really, whats cooler than all those old mountain bikes in sweet neon colors? Not much, that's what.

Forks:

A matching fork for all of the above, plus:
--Light Pink,
Light Blue,
Purple,
Lime Green,
Brown,
Safety Orange

All the colors were selected to be mixed and matched pretty nicely (not all of them, but we feel there are enough options for everyone to have a really unique setup).

So, here's the recap:

1 1/8" headtubes on 6 new frame colors, plus an all-new straight-blade fork with 12 color options. Whew, that's a lot. We'll keep the updates rolling; expect lots more photos in the coming weeks. This stuff will hopefully be available next month, but there will be lots more to talk about between now and then.

New Limited Edition Deep Purple Color

Our CrMo track frame is now available in Deep Purple for a limited time only. The same responsive track geometry and Tange tubing as our regular track frame. An optional matching lugged, flat crown, curved blade Tange CrMo fork is available. We really like this color because it has a classic, understated quality to it. The metal flake catches the sun nicely so there's something for those who want a little flash, but its dark enough that it won't look over-the-top. Also what color screams "royalty" more than "King Purp"?
